We insist on the “double nappy system” for babies and toddlers under 3 and any child not yet potty trained. This consists of a Swim Nappy (for example Huggies Little Swimmers) that can be bought in supermarkets or chemists. Worn over the Swim Nappy are neoprene pants with a snug fit around the waist and legs, often known as a 'Happy Nappy'. This prevents any accidents leaking into the pool, which would cause the pool to be closed for cleaning. You can purchase these items from Boots, Splashabout and Amazon. We do not stock them. Please ask us if you need any guidance.
We still require a disposable swim nappy and the neoprene happy nappy, even if it is the happy nappy duo. The reason we have a double nappy policy is so that there are two layers to prevent anything from leaking into the pool. Although the duo nappy claims to have a 'silver layer' that kills anything infectious, if something leaks out, we would still need to follow our procedure of closing the pool.
You can purchase these items from Boots, www.splashabout.com, JoJo Maman Bebe and Amazon.
We wouldn’t recommend using goggles in a Parent & Baby or Parent & Toddler class. It is important for small babies and children to get used to water on their face as part of their swimming safety skills. Once children are more independent in the water, goggles can help children feel more confident and progress their swimming strokes.
It’s up to you, but we suggest long hair is tied back during the swimming class.
Please arrive no more than 10 minutes before your lesson start time. Please aim to leave 10 minutes after your lesson finishes. This helps to prevents congestion in our waiting room and changing rooms.
We recommend feeding your baby an hour before your lesson starts. For toddlers and older children we recommend leaving an hour between them eating solid food and starting their lesson.
Yes, all of our swimming coaches are fully qualified Level 2 and above with valid DBS and First Aid certificates.
Use your best judgement, but if your child has flu-like symptoms such as a fever, vomiting or has tummy issues, do not bring them to the pool. If they have a mild runny nose or a cough they can still attend the lessons.
If your child is swimming in a class independently (that is without an adult), this is a polite reminder that for safety reasons we expect a Parent (or their Carer) to remain at the pool (in the waiting/viewing area) for the duration of your child's lesson. When collecting your child after their lesson, please ensure that you are visible and ready to collect your child on the half hour at the end of their class. You must ensure that the swim coach has seen your face and your child will be asked to point, to indicate their recognition of you. Please be visible at the window looking into the pool and wait for the coach to see you. Regardless of their age, your child will not leave the care of their swim coach until this has happened, so please be ready, so that the following class can start on time.
Like learning any new skill, it can take time and every child learns at their own pace. It’s a really good idea to make time outside of class, to practise swimming with your child, that way, they are likely to progress steadily.
NHS guidelines say that you can take your child swimming at any age before or after vaccinations. https://www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/childrens-health/can-my-baby-go-swimming-before-or-after-vaccinations/. We recommend waiting until your baby is at least 3 months old.
No, you do not need to be able to swim or go under water to enjoy our lessons. Our pool is 1.2m deep, so you will be able to stand in the water with your baby. Our experienced swimming coaches will help you at all times and lead the class.
There are changing facilities, including a shower with complimentary shower products, changing mats, storage boxes for your clothes and bumbo seats.
Yes, there is a waiting area with chairs, so that your partner can watch the class take place. During Parent & Child classes, just one parent/carer in the water for each child please.
There is a box in the waiting area where lost property if collected. We suggest leaving valuables at home for safe keeping as there are no lockers.
You will be given a code for the front door that you will need to gain access. This is changed termly for security. If forgotten, please refer to the email that you’ll receive one week before term starts. Otherwise, there are instructions on the outside of the door. For everyone’s security, please don’t open the door to visitors, prop open the door or leave the door open on your exit.
Yes, we clean the water using chlorine.
We are open seven days a week from 9am until 6pm.
We currently have four sites, in Fulham, Balham, Sheen and St John’s Wood.
Children can join an independent class even if they cannot swim at all. The main requirement is that children are tall enough to stand on the platform that forms part of the swimming pool. Otherwise, they just need to be old enough to listen to the coach as part of the group of three, and understand simple turn taking instructions.
All children should be supervised whilst visiting the pool. Siblings should never be left unattended in the waiting area or changing rooms if you are joining a class with another child, as the waiting area and front door is not attended.
If we can’t find you a swimming lesson space that suits you, we can add you to the waiting list. The process for rebooking each term is that we offer first refusal to everyone booked in for the current term. After this we will open bookings to the waiting list. There is no priority to the waiting list, we simply write to everyone at the allotted time each term and offer spaces on a first come, first served basis.
